Remember when “moonlighting” meant doing something like picking up a couple of waitressing shifts at a local restaurant, or babysitting on the weekends to make a few extra bucks? Gone are those days. Now, you can totally side-hustle your way to more money from the comfort of your own home (and in slippers and sweatpants, if you wish).
New research from Bankrate shows that more than one-third (36 percent) of U.S. adults earn extra money beyond their main source of income through a side hustle, with the average side hustler earning $891 per month. For many people who work a traditional 9-5, a remote side hustle offers the flexibility to earn extra money, on your own schedule.
Whether it’s to make ends meet in a world that keeps getting more expensive or to put more money away for a big life goal, like retirement, the reasons to land a remote side hustle are many. “Side hustles offer people the opportunity to not only pursue something they are passionate about but also increase their income,” says Toni Frana, Career Expert Manager at FlexJobs. “Given the inflationary pressures of the last few years and additional uncertainties in the job market and economy, side hustles can help mitigate the stressors brought on by things outside of our control and remain an attractive option for people.”
WHERE TO FIND (AND HOW TO LAND) REMOTE SIDE HUSTLES
If you see a remote side hustle in your future, you might wonder, what’s the best way to find one? Experts say there are plenty of opportunities for remote side hustles in 2025, but many workers – particularly millennial and Gen Z workers – can struggle with knowing where to look for them. “Staying up to date on the latest part-time hiring trends is a great place to start, and as FlexJobs’ research indicates, there are a variety of in-demand side jobs available across industries and career levels like graphic design, content writing, sales, and even roles for therapists and nurses,” says Frana.
Experts say your search for remote side hustles will look a lot like a traditional job search – you’ll use many of the same strategies, and look in similar places, like LinkedIn, Indeed or FlexJobs, for example. The first step you should take, though, involves doing a “time audit,” of sorts. “For side-hustles that are remote and/or flexible jobs, you first should determine how much time you have to commit to a side-hustle, then as you search for the right opportunity, work to find roles that fit in with that amount of time,” suggests Frana.
From there, you’ll want to tap into the tried and true job-searching skills you’ve developed throughout your career. “Tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for, following up on job applications, and leveraging networking opportunities are recommended and will help make sure you have visibility to employers,” adds Frana.
