China man revived after heart attack says: ‘I need to rush to work’

A man in central China has caught attention of the social media, after collapsing from a heart attack at a railway station, only to regain consciousness and say, “I need to rush to work.” The incident occurred on February 4, the last day of the eight-day Spring Festival holiday, at a railway station in Changsha, Hunan province. The man, in his 40s, was queuing to board a train when he suddenly collapsed.

Several railway station staff and a doctor from a major local health centre immediately rushed to his aid, performing emergency resuscitation. After about 20 minutes, the man regained consciousness and shocked onlookers by saying, “I need to take the high-speed train to go to work,” declining immediate medical attention.

A doctor at the scene urged him to go to the hospital, warning that he might have suffered injuries from the fall. After some persuasion, he finally agreed to board an ambulance.

Social media reactions
The man’s response resonated with many social media users in China. “Oh dear, he woke up and the first thing he thought of was to make money. I am so moved!” one person commented.
“He is not alone in this society. Most of us have to bear high burdens, from house loans to kids’ education. It is not easy for everyone,” another wrote.

Work pressure and unemployment
The incident comes amid concerns about high unemployment rates in China, as per SCMP. The jobless rate for people aged 16 to 24, excluding students, was 16.1% in November 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Cases of sudden death due to excessive work hours frequently make headlines. In 2022, an IT engineer in Shanghai, around 30 years old, died suddenly in a gym, leaving behind a pregnant wife and a home loan of 20,000 yuan ($2,700) per month, as per SCMP.
