In today’s uncertain job market, fear of layoffs haunts many employees across industries. Even high performers worry, as stability feels increasingly temporary. Recently, a man took to the social media platform Reddit to share how a Bengaluru-based company laid him off after a change in company policy.
A young software engineer, who completed a BCA-MCA degree, shared that he was laid off after the firm reportedly changed its hiring policy to retain only engineers with a BTech in Computer Science.
The engineer explained that he was unable to pursue a BTech degree due to financial constraints.
“Hello guys, I completed my MCA last year. I did BCA + MCA. I couldn’t do BTech CSE due to financial problems. Last year, I joined a company in Bengaluru with a 7 LPA package as an SDE. But the company laid me off, saying it had changed its policy to hire only BTech CSE students,” the post read.
According to the post, the company justified the layoff by stating that it had revised its internal policy to employ only BTech CSE graduates for technical positions. However, Times Now couldn’t independently verify the authenticity of the post.
The post struck a chord across social media, sparking a wave of support and criticism of the industry’s rigid hiring norms.
Here’s How Netizens Reacted:
“I’m so sorry to hear this, but it sounds like a cheap excuse from their side… Why would a new hiring rule apply to existing employees?” one user wrote.
“If I get laid off someday, I’ll take a 1-2 month break, learn new tech like .NET or Rust, and aim for at least a 5–6 LPA package. Maybe you can do the same,” suggested another.
“Hamesha yaad rakho bhai – ‘Ye din bhi chale jayenge’,” a third user said.
“I’m so sorry to hear that. IT firms are seriously doomed in India,” commented a fourth.
