Bengaluru’s tech workforce spends 50 mins commuting to work one-way

Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s Global Capability Centre (GCC) workforce spends an average of 50 minutes travelling around 15 km one way to their offices, with Wednesdays witnessing the highest number of cab bookings.

MoveInSync’s 2025 quarterly report, released on Tuesday, reveals commute insights based on data from its GCC clients in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and the National Capital Region (Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida).

Bengaluru, which hosts nearly 30 per cent of all GCCs in India, has seen a 41 per cent growth in GCC establishments between 2019 and 2024. These offices are concentrated along the Outer Ring Road, Whitefield, and Electronics City — areas that necessitate longer commutes for employees.

With many companies in the city adopting a hybrid work structure, most employees commute to the office two or three days a week. Among these, Wednesday sees the highest footfall.

This trend is reflected in the report, which notes that cab bookings peak at 82,000 on Wednesdays, compared to 61,000 on Fridays.

The report also highlights industry-specific office attendance patterns and notes that Bengaluru’s GCC employees take about 45,000 electric vehicle (EV) trips every month.

Deepesh Agarwal, CEO and co-founder of MoveInSync, emphasised the importance of integrating efficient, safe, and cost-effective commute options as GCCs expand across India. “Providing office commute as a service acts as a lever for GCCs to attract and retain talent. Making employee commutes efficient and sustainable requires a well-rounded approach that considers all aspects — from cost and safety to environmental impact,” he said.

IT employees working along the Outer Ring Road cite poor traffic management as a major contributor to long commute times.

“Metro site management has to improve, encroachments need to be cleared, and more public transport options are needed for the ORR crowd. Some people spend over 1.5 hours just to reach the ORR, which is simply too much time in traffic,” a senior executive at a GCC told DH.

Rama NS, advisor to the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA), said that the upcoming Yellow Line of Namma Metro should help ease traffic by reducing the number of vehicles on the road. “More than the cost and commute time, I expect this to reduce inconvenience and pollution, and increase comfort. Improving first-mile connectivity will help greatly,” she said.
